MYANMAR AMNESTY

Myanmar's new president pardons 4,335 prisoners, political detainees' fate unclear

Yangon, Myanmar, Apr 17 (EFE/EPA).- Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, who was sworn in a week ago after leading a military coup, has approved an amnesty for 4,335 prisoners, state-run broadcaster MRTV reported Friday, without providing details on whether any political detainees are among those to be freed.

According to the broadcaster, 179 foreign nationals will also be pardoned and deported, while an unspecified number of prisoners on death row will have their sentences commuted to life in prison. Those serving sentences of less than 40 years will see their terms reduced by one-sixth.
