Villages in northern mountains of Madrid face lack of generational replacement
Montejo de la Sierra, Spain, Apr 17 (EFE).- In the Sierra Norte region of Madrid, the lack of a new generation to take over has become a recurring issue affecting many small municipalities—towns that have been losing population and basic services for decades and now survive on weekend tourism, occasional remote work, and an aging population.Against this backdrop of demographic stagnation, Davinia and Alejandro left Rivas-Vaciamadrid, a town in Madrid with over 100,000 residents, in 2021 to settle in Montejo de la Sierra, a municipality of about 400 residents, along with their two children, Amanda (15) and Aleixandre (10).
