Japan’s Yakuza in long decline amid falling membership

Tokyo, Apr 17 (EFE).- Japan’s Yakuza crime syndicates are in long-term decline, with membership at historic lows, activities increasingly restricted and new criminal groups emerging online, according to experts.

“They are not dead, but they are moribund,” sociologist Martina Baradel, an associate professor at Nagoya University who studies these groups, told EFE, noting that the once powerful and highly structured networks have lost prominence and members in recent years.
