Indonesian officials observe moon to determine Eid Al-Fitr date

Lhok Nga, Indonesia, Mar 19 (EFE/EPA).- Employees of the Aceh Provincial Office of the Ministry of Religion used telescopes on Thursday to observe the position of the moon to determine the date of Eid al-Fitr in Lhok Nga, Aceh Besar.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important Islamic holidays, celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, prayer and reflection, and is traditionally observed with communal prayers, charity and festive meals shared with family and friends.

It is common for several countries to determine the end of Ramadan on different days, as it is based on the sighting of the moon. Eid al-Fitr celebrations last three days and begin at the end of the holy month.
