Northern Thailand declares emergency disaster zones as haze hits record highs

Chiang Mai (Thailand), 06/04/2026.- Motorists wearing protective face masks travel amid smog from heavy concentrations of fine particulates matter PM2.5 in the city of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, 06 April 2026. Northern Thailand is currently facing a severe environmental and public health crisis as a thick haze of hazardous air pollution blankets the region. In early April, the Ministry of Interior officially declared Chiang Mai, Lamphun, and Phayao as emergency disaster zones, allowing for the immediate mobilization of provincial budgets and military resources to combat the situation.
